Memoryholed Myths
Memory Hole: any mechanism for the deliberate alteration or disappearance of inconvenient or embarrassing documents, photographs, transcripts or other records, such as from a website or other archive, particularly as an attempt to give the impression that something never happened.
It has become increasingly difficult to keep up with news stories to say the least. The 24/7 globalized news cycle is spread out amongst a multitude of corporate and independent platforms making it increasingly difficult to track narratives. The infographic below is but a fraction of how many corporate journalist outlets exist around the globe:
Now look at the infographic that covers media only in the US:
And this isn’t including independent outlets that remain free from corporate pressure.
Think about how many articles are written by each publication per hour, day, week, month, and year. Then think about how much effort it would take to track a story across multiple platforms to make the necessary connections in understanding an issue in its entirety. And that’s not even mentioning the retractions and edits which are made at lightning speeds - if they are made at all. And there is little to no accountability for incorrect statements even once the record is “corrected”.
Remember the Russiagate story we heard endlessly for 4+ years after Trump became president? And how the investigation found no evidence Russia aligning with Trump in his victory? Yet many still believe these ties exist as evidence of Trump’s corruption.
Or what about the Biden laptop case which was not only deemed as Russian misinformation by 50 ex-intelligence officials but the story itself was banned from being posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the oldest newspaper in America. Not a single consequence or punishment has been doled out for this mischaracterization of the truth. Meanwhile it is now known that not only is the Biden laptop story real but that it has been analyzed and published by independent outlet Marco Polo for free for anyone to read online.
And that’s not even touching on the fact that news organizations will gladly scrap a story for any number of reasons. Look no further than 2019 when ABC News co-anchor Amy Robach got caught on a hot-mic explaining why they killed the Epstein story years before it started to come out:
Notice how angry she is that she didn’t get the scoop? How absolutely devastated she is she didn’t get credit for breaking this story? It’s a game of fame to them and they don’t care. Forgot about this one didn’t ya? We all have and that’s the problem.
Where does this leave us? Scrambling for scraps as we try to piece together narratives from the crumbs we are lucky to catch? There are still plenty of intrepid individuals out there doing their best to track these stories and write exposés but it’s not enough, not yet anyway.
Here’s a chronological “shortlist” of some stories you’ve probably Memoryholed as Myths:
Operation Mockingbird - covert CIA program aimed at influencing and manipulating the American media to promote pro-US propaganda during the Cold War era. NOT TO BE CONFUSED for Project Mockingbird which was a wiretapping operation by JFK in 1963 to detect the sources of government leaks by eavesdropping on journalists.
Trillions of dollars being unaccounted for the day before 9/11 - Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld stated in a public news conference that the Department of Defense “could not track $2.3 trillion in transactions” due to their outdated accounting methods.
2008 Financial Crisis - catastrophic financial fraud and mismanagement of the US housing market by Wall Street banks led to 8 million homes facing foreclosure, average home prices dropping by 40%, and national unemployment surging to 10% by 2009. The S&P stock market plummeted by 38.5% effectively erasing $7.4 TRILLION in stock value from 2008-2009. Public tax dollars went to financing bailouts for the bank that played with people’s lives in addition to the millions worth of bonuses they gave each other. The Big Short is a great intro on this crisis for those that haven’t seen it:
W.H.O. COVID Origins Investigation - in early 2021 the WHO sent a team of international “experts” to Wuhan to investigate the origins of COVID. The team concluded that a lab leak was extremely unlikely and that the virus most likely jumped from bats to humans through an intermediary species. To date China as well as the WHO has faced 0 consequences for their role in covering up the origins of COVID. The WHO also actively avoided answering any questions regarding Taiwan and their COVID response:
UFO/UAP disclosure - in May 2022 the US gov’t held congressional hearings on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs or UFOs). Testimony revealed that the number of reported UAP sightings had grown to 400 since the previous year’s mandated report. Officials stated that most UAPs could be identified through analysis but some incidents defied explanation:
Sidenote: the weirdest part about this story flaring up was that the Mexican gov’t later held hearings of their own where they has individuals present “alien bodies”.
Gunman kills son of judge overseeing Deutsche Bank–Epstein trial - on July 19th 2020 the son of US District Judge Esther Salas was killed and her husband was critically wounded in a shooting at their home. The gunman, dressed as a FedEx delivery driver, shot Daniel Anderl through the heart when he answered the door. The suspect Roy Den Hollander was later found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in New York.
Maui Wildfires - in August 2023 wind-driven fires on Maui caused widespread destruction killing at least 102 people, injuring 67+ and destroying over 2,200 structures. The current damage estimates are at $6 billion. Alert sirens were never used and the fire crews somehow ran out of water when fighting the deadly blaze. FEMA famously provided $700 to all eligible HOUSEHOLDS. Several attempts have been made by realtors to buy the land and redevelop it.
German gov’t minister Robert Habeck lied to shut down nuclear powerplants - in 2022 a small group of “green activists” within the ministry of economy and the environment, led by ministers Robert Habeck and Steffi Lemke, manipulated and falsified expert judgement to deceive politicians and the public on nuclear energy.
Keep in mind - these are just 17 examples of consequential stories since the 1940’s that have effectively been memoryholed. There are countless others that have been documented throughout the centuries - could write books about them all and still come up short. Not to mention that just about all the stories I’ve mentioned are monumental in scope and for the sake of brevity have kept their summaries short. Do your own research and dive into them to see just how far the rabbit hole goes.
Now think about all the stories that I haven’t mentioned and what consequences they have had on greater society. We are exposed only to a fraction of a fraction of the “truth” as we see it. All fed through the Great Filter of politics and corporate journalism via their narrowly defined “Overton Window”. And what of the millions of people affected by these issues? What happens to them when the 24/7 news cycle moves on to the next trend? Who is held accountable for it all in the end?
No one person is able to maintain accurate recollection about all the stories I’ve mentioned and the countless others I haven’t. It’s quite literally impossible to understand these stories and facts in a coherent narrative with our biological makeup. And there are countless of otherwise innocent people out there right this very moment dealing with the consequences of these incidents - when in reality an entire other group of people ought to be held accountable.
This is the way of the world - or at least the way of the present world. Barring a technological intervention in humanity’s evolution I don’t see this being “solved” anytime soon. Ultimately this problem lies in a single quote attributed to Spanish philosopher George Santayana who in 1905 wrote:
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
And until the moment a large enough concentration of the populace is able to remember the narratives of the past and their ties to the present - we exist in a perpetual state of Memoryholed Myths. Floating from one story to another as the tide of outrage swells and dissipates with the years. One can only wonder what threads we will witness as they unravel before us in the coming years. Maybe someday we’ll be able to tie it all together - maybe.

Assange Absconds
Only 2 weeks ago on June 24th 2024 Julian Assange was freed from prison after striking a plea deal with the US gov’t. Under the deal, Assange plead guilty to a single charge of conspiracy to obtain and disclose classified US national defense documents. After 10 years of imprisonment - half of which was self-imposed in an Ecuadorian embassy in London - Assange is finally able to live as a free man. Maybe not entirely free considering the CIA has an intelligence gathering base in Australia where Assange returned - but I bet it beats a 6ft by 8ft cell in Belmarsh Prison.
His crime? The facilitation of illegal disclosure of classified documents produced by governments and their agencies around the globe. Leaking information that allowed the public to see exactly what their leaders and armies were up to behind closed doors. Not sure how well versed you are in US history but they REALLY don’t like whistleblowers - don’t think there is a nation that does for that matter.
And why would they? Whistleblowers make it harder to hide the plot. They leak your most secretive communications for all to see. The thin veil of rehearsed PR bullshit they serve us from their podiums disappears the moment a whistleblower gets involved. They are among the few that help keep the powerful in check in the only way that matters - by revealing the truths they are hiding. What we do with that information is up to each society but that’s a story for another day.
For those unfamiliar, here is a chronological list of some of the greatest leaks that WikiLeaks has facilitated:
Collateral Murder - in April 2010, WikiLeaks released the “Collateral Murder” video which showed a US Apache helicopter attack in Baghdad in 2007 that killed several civilians, including 2 Reuters journalists. The video sparked outrage over the US military’s rules of engagement and the treatment of civilians:
They revealed that more than 150 innocent Afghans and Pakistanis were held for years without charges, the youngest captive being 14 years old and oldest being 89, that 100 detainees had been diagnosed with depressive or psychotic illnesses, and that the US heavily relied on evidence obtained through torture.
The response of Barack Obama when this was released? He plainly stated that after 9/11 they “tortured some folks”. Don’t believe me? Watch for yourself:TPP, TTIP, TISA leaks - the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and Trade in Services Agreement were private trade deals that were being negotiated in the mid 2010’s by nations that comprised 2/3rds of the Global GDP. The details of these agreements were kept secret from the citizens of the nations that were negotiating even though it would be their lives that would be affected most. And it wasn’t all about trade/economics:
NSA Targeting of World Leaders - in February 2016 WikiLeaks published classified documents showing how the NSA surveilled UN officials and foreign state leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The stories I’ve posted above make up only a portion of the leaks that were posted on WikiLeaks. There are plenty more where that came from and if you’re interested in them you can find them here.
Suffice to say, if it were not for the work of Assange and the WikiLeaks team the world would be a VERY different place. Many of these leaks have pulled back the veil on the geopolitical state of the world when it comes to trade, surveillance, and armed conflict. It has allowed for the citizenry to get closer to the muddied “truth” that lies between the lines.
There is little that any one person can do to fix any of the issues I’ve noted above but that’s not what’s at stake here. The first step towards affecting any real change is to have an open and honest discussion around the facts. And it is because of the sacrifices and efforts of Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden, and Julian Assange along with the WikiLeaks team that we can begin this discussion.
For if we operate without a shared consensus on the facts we might as well be scrambling in the dark. If people can’t agree on the foundations of a story then the discourse around it is inherently futile as its based on falsehoods.
Take the DNC leaks for example - before their release one could make any number of assumptions as to why Bernie Sanders was sidelined as a candidate. Maybe he didn’t appeal to the right base, maybe his campaign spending was ineffective, or maybe his policies lacked widespread public appeal. You could break down statistics relating to specific voting blocs and what they support about Bernie and why. But all of that becomes useless when you learn that the DNC colluded against the nomination of Bernie Sanders as their candidate. The discussion enters another realm altogether.
Now I’m not even defending Bernie but we should all collectively agree that a political party shouldn’t be allowed to dismiss the people’s demands because they think they know better than them. And who’s to say that this same incident hasn’t happened before with previous presidential candidates in decades past across party lines?
Who’s to say that any of what I’ve mentioned above isn’t still happening? Just because the NSA got caught spying on the UN and foreign leaders years ago do we really believe they stopped? Do we really believe that “allied forces” in armed conflicts are incapable of committing war crimes and hiding them from the public?
No.
These leaks are just a fraction of a fraction of what we know about the disturbing nature of our world and its leaders’ actions. Governments will not surrender this information to the public openly - there is no incentive for them to do so. And so we are left to rely on whistleblowers like Assange and organizations like WikiLeaks to provide us with a peek behind the curtain.
There’s arguments to be made about the validity of these leaks or their sources and intentions. There’s arguments to be made about the moral character of the leakers themselves including Assange and those around him. Whatever your personal take - it is undeniable that the work of Assange and WikiLeaks gets us one step closer to affecting change now that people can see the “truth” for themselves and make up their own minds.
Hopefully with the advent of AI, incidents like these will only Accelerate in their proliferation and scale. It is the only way we can begin to hold those in power accountable for their actions in a time when that is of the utmost importance.
I leave you with this quote by Thomas Jefferson
I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education.
